A neat whipping is mostly arithmetic

Whipping a rope end — binding it tightly with twine so it can’t fray or unlay — is one of the first skills every rope-worker learns, and it’s mostly a question of covering enough length with enough tightly packed wraps. Too short a whipping doesn’t hold; too few wraps leave gaps where fraying can start.

This tool turns the standard rule of thumb — a whipped section about as long as the rope is thick — into a concrete wrap count and twine length for your specific rope and twine, so you can cut a working length before you start rather than running out mid-wrap.

Why should the whipping be as long as the rope is thick?

It's a traditional rigging rule of thumb: a whipped section roughly as long as the rope's own diameter (some riggers stretch it to 1.5×) gives the binding enough wraps to grip the strands firmly and resist the fraying force at a cut end, without wasting twine on an oversized band that adds no extra holding power.

Why does the calculator use the rope's circumference, not its diameter?

Because each wrap of twine goes all the way around the rope — its length is the rope's circumference (π × diameter), not the diameter itself. Multiplying that per-wrap length by the number of wraps gives the actual twine consumed by the binding.

What's the finishing allowance for?

Every whipping method leaves a working tail: a starting length to anchor under the first wraps, and — for methods like the common (plain) or sailmaker's whipping — a tail to tuck under the final wraps or thread through with a needle to lock it off. The default allowance of about 4× the rope's diameter covers both ends generously for most rope sizes.

Does whipping method (common vs. sailmaker's) change the calculation?

The wrap-count math is the same either way, since both bind the same length of rope with wraps of similar spacing. A sailmaker's whipping adds a locking cross-stitch through the rope's core, which uses a little more of the finishing allowance than a plain whipping's simple tucked tail — bump the finishing multiplier up slightly if you're sewing through the core.
