A splice is only as strong as its last tuck
A common source of a weak or slipping splice isn’t bad technique — it’s stopping one tuck short. Each additional tuck (or, in double-braid, additional inch of bury) adds friction and holding power, and rope fiber matters just as much as strand count: what’s plenty for coarse natural fiber can work loose in slick modern synthetics.
Before you start, measure your rope’s actual diameter and identify its construction and fiber. Plan the tuck count (or bury length) and add the extra material to your working length so you’re not caught short mid-splice.

Why do synthetic ropes need more tucks than natural fiber?
Slippery synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester grip each other far less than coarse natural fiber does, so a splice with the natural-fiber minimum can work its way loose over time in synthetic line. Adding two extra tucks gives the splice more surface area and friction to hold, which is why 5 tucks is a commonly recommended minimum for synthetic 3-strand rope versus 3 for natural fiber.
What does 'tapering' a splice actually mean?
After the full-strength tucks, a tapered splice thins each strand down (cutting out some of the yarns) for the final couple of tucks so the splice gradually narrows back to the rope's normal diameter instead of ending in an abrupt lump. It's mostly about a smoother profile — for running rope through a block or fairlead — and adds a modest amount of extra length.
Why is the bury length for double-braid so much longer than a 3-strand splice?
A double-braid splice doesn't tuck strands into each other the way a 3-strand splice does — instead, one end of the rope is threaded ('buried') inside the hollow core of the other section, and friction plus a locking stitch hold it in place. That mechanism needs a long bury to develop enough grip, which is why the commonly cited figure runs many multiples of the rope's diameter rather than a handful of tuck-lengths.
