The most common rope-buying mistake is measuring only the span you need to cover and forgetting everything a knot consumes on top of it. A bowline, a clove hitch, a whipped end, or a splice all shorten the usable run of a rope — sometimes by a foot or more per knot — and that loss compounds across every piece you cut.

How much extra rope does a knot really use?

It depends on the knot and the rope's diameter, but a workable rule of thumb for everyday knots is about one unit of length per knot — for example, roughly a foot for many hitches and bends tied in typical utility rope. Bulkier knots (like a bowline in thick line) or a full splice eat noticeably more; when in doubt, measure a practice knot on your actual rope and use that as your allowance.

Why add a waste margin on top of the exact math?

Because the exact math assumes a perfect cut and a perfect first attempt. A 10% margin covers trimming a frayed end, redoing a knot that didn't seat right, and small measuring errors — cheap insurance against coming up just short after you've already committed the rope.

Should I estimate each piece separately if they're different lengths?

Yes — this calculator assumes identical pieces (same run length and same knot count). For a project with mixed lengths, run it once per distinct piece and add the totals, or run the longest piece first to make sure a single cut length covers your longest span.

Does this account for stretch in the rope?

No — this is a cutting-length estimate, not a load calculation. Dynamic and some synthetic ropes stretch under load, which is a separate consideration from how much material you need to tie the knots in the first place.
